Preventing and repairing blistering

If sandwich panels are damaged, the top layer may detach from the insulation layer. When this happens, hollow areas form behind the outer panel. When heating up, these areas will start to expand, resulting in a blister, raised area or fold. Not only does this look bad, but it also significantly affects the protective and insulating capacity of the sandwich panels.

During the production and processing of panels, certain conditions may likewise result in blistering. As a specialist in damage repairs, Van Heemskerk has developed a variety of effective repair methods for blistering.

FAQ
Where does this issue occur?

Blistering and folds usually appear on façades and, less frequently, on roofs. They usually occur on the parts of the building that experience the most sunlight (southern façade). These areas are subject to high temperatures, especially if the panels have a dark coating, which absorbs more heat. Temperatures on these façades may rise to 65 to 90 degrees Celsius. This will also lead to increased tension in the panel. No matter the colour, however, all panels may suffer from blistering. It also happens on the insides of roof or façade panels. In this case, the issue is often related to the adhesives used.

Is blistering harmful to my panel?

Blisters are primarily an aesthetic issue. From a technical point of view, the panel performs no different than panels without any blisters. Blisters may grow due to temperature fluctuations, however, resulting in stretches and folds in the outer layer. At this stage, the blister may become impossible or very difficult to repair. As such, we recommend having blisters fixed as soon as possible. Feel free to contact us for more, non-binding information.

What is your method when it comes to blistering?

Blistering differs from project to project. The specifics highly depend on the location of the building, the panel type in question, the size etc. We usually recommend an on-site visit to discuss the possibilities.

For projects abroad, we need as much information as possible, including pictures, a video and a plan showing the positions. Based on this, we will make an estimate of the costs and a quote for an on-site trial repair.
